I used to come home from my job and go
to bed. It was only 4:00 or 4:30 in the
afternoon, but I was exhausted. On these
days I didn’t go lie down, I would
sit in front of the TV with a bag of chips
and eat at least half of it. I had a gym
membership but never used it. My husband
would always gently encourage me to go and
work out, but I just felt like I was too
tired. Finally in fall of 2007 I started
going to the gym most every day after school
to walk on the treadmill or work out on
the elliptical machines. Sometimes I would
throw in a few weight machines. I didn’t
know what I was doing, but I started feeling
a little better. I wanted to get up the
courage to go to a fitness class, but I
didn’t have the confidence.
One day I saw one of the instructors rushing
in the facility and almost zoom into the
fitness classroom. It sort of amused me.
She had this long flowing hair and a bandana
tied around her head. She seemed so energetic
and happy. I watched her go into class like
this for a couple of weeks. After being
bored to death by ‘working a machine”
and watching the E! Channel until I knew
all of the celebrity gossip, I decided to
work up the guts to attend one of this energetic
instructor’s classes. I didn’t
even know what it was, but I thought I’d
try it just to see…
It may seem crazy to say that attending
this class has literally changed my attitude
about life. I had more fun the first day
I attended “Zumba” with Corina
Meza than I ever had in any other fitness
class (taken years before of course). Let’s
just say from the day of the first class
I was hooked. The footwork is relatively
easy to follow and the energy in the room
is so positive. Corina is an absolutely
wonderful instructor and has an adorable
personality. She always takes time to show
new students proper moves and techniques.
She encourages us to work at our own fitness
level. She challenges us as she demonstrates
some absolutely unbelievable, inimitable
moves! Corina’s positive love for
dance and fitness is contagious. I have
brought many friends to her classes and
they all love Zumba and Corina. Since the
day I became brave enough to attend a Zumba
class I have lost 20 pounds, gained many
friends and a love for Latin dance. I’m
not really a good dancer, but that isn’t
the point. I love working out now and the
days of sitting on the couch with a bag
of chips are a thing of the past. I would
recommend Zumba to anyone who wants to have
fun while they work out. This form of fitness
doesn’t feel like working out at all.
It is a Dance Party!!
